WHAT IS CORIAN?

The material behind a seamless scrub sink

Corian® and solid surface, explained — why a non-porous, thermoformed acrylic composite is the hygienic standard for surgical scrub-up.

THE MATERIAL

Solid surface is an acrylic-based composite of natural minerals and pure acrylic resin — best known under the DuPont™ Corian® brand, alongside Staron® and Meganite®. It is the material we thermoform into seamless surgical scrub sinks: non-porous all the way through, repairable, and certified for demanding hygienic environments.

01

Non-porous

Sealed through its full thickness, so liquids, bacteria and stains have nowhere to penetrate.

02

Seamless joints

Sheets and components fuse into one continuous piece — joints become invisible and impermeable.

03

Thermoformable

Heated and shaped into coved bowls, splashbacks and radiused edges with no 90° traps.

04

Renewable

Scratches and wear sand out and the finish restores in place — repaired, not replaced.

05

Colour-stable

A consistent colour and matte finish that hold their appearance through years of clinical use.

06

Certified

Backed by a 10-year material guarantee from the manufacturer; specified for healthcare worldwide.

HERITAGE

Corian® was invented and patented by DuPont™ — the American innovator behind Nylon®, Lycra®, Kevlar® and Teflon®. Its name was inspired by the inventor’s daughter, Corinna.

01

What is solid surface?

Solid surface is a man-made composite — roughly two-thirds natural mineral (aluminium trihydrate) bound in one-third acrylic resin — engineered for surfaces that demand high physical and chemical resistance alongside strict hygiene. It is the same family of material used across worktops, healthcare and laboratory environments the world over.

DuPont™ Corian® is the original and best-known brand; Staron® and Meganite® are equivalent surfaces we also work with. When you specify a colour from these ranges, we manufacture in that exact material.

02

Seamless & non-porous

Unlike stone, laminate or welded steel, solid surface has no pores and no mechanical joints. Sheets and mouldings are bonded so the seam disappears, leaving one continuous surface that water and contamination cannot get behind.

For a scrub station that means the bowl, splashback and drainage form a single coved piece — the geometry infection-control teams ask for, wiped clean and disinfected in one pass.

03

Renewable, not disposable

Because the colour runs through the whole thickness, the surface can be renewed rather than replaced. Everyday scuffs and even deeper marks are sanded back and the matte finish restored — on site for minor wear, or refinished by our team for larger areas.

That repairability is why solid surface outlasts stainless steel and ceramic in high-throughput scrub rooms, and why far less material ends up in landfill over a station’s life.

COMPOSITION

What Corian® is made of

Roughly one-third transparent acrylic resin and two-thirds natural minerals — mainly aluminium trihydrate (ATH) derived from bauxite. Natural pigments give every sheet its own distinctive look.

For more than half a century it has redefined longevity in the built environment — and it still comes with a 10-year material warranty.

  • 33% Acrylic resin Transparent binder
  • 67% Natural minerals Aluminium trihydrate (ATH)

HOW IT COMPARES

Solid surface vs other materials

One surface that does almost everything — seamless, hygienic and renewable. Here's how solid surface measures up against the materials it's usually weighed against for clinical spaces.

HISTORY

A short history of Corian®

From a DuPont research breakthrough to the benchmark for solid surface worldwide.

  1. 1960s

    The breakthrough

DuPont researchers set out to create a material meeting strict hygienic, technical and aesthetic standards.

  2. 1967

    Corian® launches

Introduced to market and quickly adopted by architects, designers and manufacturers worldwide.

  3. Post-patent

    A category forms

As the patent expired, quality alternatives arrived — Staron®, Hi-Macs®, Hanex®, Krion® and more.

  4. Today

    The benchmark

Still regarded as the reference for solid surface — reliable, flexible and long-lasting.
